Barry Art Museum is one of several museums located on Old Dominion University's campus. The museum prides themselves in mission of advancing the understanding of art in it's many diverse forms. Their primary collection is mostly represented by the following mediums: glass, paintings, automata dolls and works on paper.
During the pandemic, Barry Art Museum took time to rethink how their relationship might look like with communities they serve. Through outreach to various Norfolk, Virginia panels, BAM sought to experiment with new ways of of exploring educating through art.
Present a series of works of art to people with augmented-reality-enabled phones that are walking, biking, or jogging on the Elizabeth River Trail as part of International Museum Day 2021.
Collaborate with Barry Art Museum curators to capture and create 1-3 3D models using photogrammetry techniques and embed on static websites that can be viewed in AR.
Waterproof graphics, with QR codes, placed along the Elizabeth River Trail. When users scan the QR code, they are presented with a static website to then view various exhibit pieces through AR.
The Augmented Reality: Art in the Wild! project successfully increase awareness of the Barry Art Museums new exhibit pieces during quarantine—their doors were not open to the public. By including the hashtag for this campaign we were able to see that the reach of the exhibit pieces reached cross continents through various social media app such as Instagram, Ticktok and Twitter.
